Description:
Similar to Project #3, Project #4 has a focus towards audio composition genres to showcase a work of Sonic Composition. Of the options given, between audio essays, podcasts, oral histories and soundscapes, I had chosen “soundscape” and created several degrading pieces of ambient hauntology, featuring 1920s ballroom jazz samples that progressively become more distorted. This project was created to simulate the feeling of confusion and mixed emotion within the era of COVID-19, shinning light onto mental health during the “new normal” era.
Reflection:
Based on the works of Leyland Kirby, a.k.a. The Caretaker – such as An Empty Bliss Beyond This World – this soundscape is made to express the feelings of confusion and frustration that progressively becomes more and more obscure and convoluted. I feel that by showcasing an emotional catharsis in a similar process as expressionism as an art form, this series of audio compositions represent ideas better suited in an artistic form than traditional texts. I feel that there is more to expand upon with this album of audio samples, but the experience of experimenting with hauntology was a rewarding one, allowing me to tweak and work with elements that Leyland Kirby had most likely worked with himself.
