Description

This document is a collection of articles and other resources on the Covid-19 outbreaks, including clinical reports, commentary, and management guidelines. The contents are formatted as a periodical magazine to reach specialized audiences, audience receptivity, and visual quality. The purpose of this document is to update information about the Coronavirus pandemic and to make the readers easily find what they want to know. The layouts on every page are designed through Adobe InDesign. By using the text overlay and photos, I focused on creating the layout visually striking. As the editorial designs like magazine spreads keep fonts only two or three, this document used only three types of fonts: “Arial”, “Minion Pro”, and “Bodoni”. These fonts visually separate different textual elements like headlines, body copy, and captions/writers’ names. Besides the layout, I applied the qualities such as size, boldness, and spacing to contribute to how the readers should navigate the page and what text should attract attention first.

Reflection

There is a lot of magazines but only few of them succeeds in grabbing readers’ attention. I think it’s because there are rules that all the editors should follow to make the design attractive. The first thing I focused on was combining fonts. Many fonts have distinct moods and personalities – serious, casual, playful, etc. I chose the fonts that have sans serif design for the body text, because it slightly increased readability compared to the serifs design fonts such as “Times New Roman.” I used “Arial” the most and used “Minion Pro” and “Bodoni” for headlines. As I described in my description, I also applied a visual hierarchy to fonts by separating the textual elements.

This project was the most enjoyable among the projects that I’ve done in this course. Once I have decided on the format and theme, I really enjoyed creating each and every page. I also learned that the combination of the fonts, grids, balance between images and texts are all vital rules of design composition and layout. Not only that, but I also became more confident with using Adobe InDesign than before.
