Description:

I designed a logo for an imaginary future freelance writing business. Before I created my initial attempt as sketches in the pages of a commonplace book, I had “interviewed” myself and asked myself what I would need to aim for to make an effective business logo. After then having listened to similar feedback from classmates and from my instructor about my  drawings and about my self-“interview,” all of which was feedback that I agreed with, I created an entirely new logo, with Inkscape software. The new logo focuses on an imaginary, future freelance speech-writing business.

Reflection:

I initially designed a logo based on an idea that I later abandoned after my classmates and my class instructor each had provided me similar feedback, which I also agreed with. As such, the logo design process was similar to my experiences as a writer, since I routinely solicit feedback on my writings in workshops or from friends. I am not surprised, therefore, that I ended up abandoning my original logo project, especially since I am not used to either designing logos or doing graphic design projects. The realization that I would abandon my initial design, however, was not at all “traumatic,” but was a positive development.

(As a writer, I have had the experience previously of having had to abandon one major writing project after years of on- and off-work on it. That failure” had disappointed me much more). I also found helpful my so-called self-“interview” that I had pre-conducted before I later designed either my initial logo or the new logo that I ultimately settled upon, which was a logo for an imagined future freelance speech-writing business.

As far as design software goes—I relied upon Inkscape for my logo project—
I certainly would welcome advancing much closer to proficient with such design software in the future.
