Description:

The podcast will discuss the benefits of using hip-hop pedagogy and sonic rhetoric as a viable praxis in Composition and Rhetoric Studies. Throughout the podcast, I will unpack the rich history of sonic rhetoric and hip-hop culture and integrate the two concepts to develop a praxis that can be used throughout university institutions. Using a myriad of scholars’ scholarship I will examine the importance of identification, representation, and voice using sonic rhetoric and hip-hop pedagogy. Hip-Hop pedagogy is seen as supplemental means of teaching when in fact it can be an important piece of relating to students throughout composition courses.

Reflection:

My design thinking process affected my content tremendously. Being that I decided to take on the task of creating my own podcast I struggled to think of what I wanted to talk about for twenty to thirty minutes. So, I used my commonplace book as a platform to jot down my thoughts and put myself in the shoes of a podcaster. My empathize portion of my design thinking process is where my topics came into fruition. I had to ask myself “what would be of interest to me to chat about for that allotted amount of time?”. I wrote down all of the things that I am passionate about and how they can be integrated into writing studies. That is how I came up with the idea of hip-hop in writing studies. Honestly, the process was only slightly different than that of writing assignment. I still had to do research as I would for a writing assignment and then jot down my ideas on google drive to allow me to flow well in my podcast. The only difference, in my opinion, was the fact that it was in a different medium and all of my research that I jotted down was not within the confines a traditional writing assignment.

Moreover, the most thing I was satisfied with was actually being able to operate the software. During the finalization of my project, I decided to use Adobe Audition and I was really satisfied with the way it allowed me to manipulate my audio to get it exactly how I envisioned. I tried using another Software called Audacity but, I felt like it was limiting in terms of what I can do. Adobe Audition has a “template” for editing a podcast so, I could drop my audio in the appropriate multitrack sessions (i.e. host, interviewer, sound fx, music bed, and etc.) and then edit it to my liking. Also to be safe, I followed most of the conventions of a podcast due to the fact that it was my first time ever creating a podcast. All in all, I believe the podcast was the most challenging project for me in this course but, it showed me that anyone can truly tap into their creative nature. This project was my favorite because it was the most challenging for me. I really do look forward to creating more podcasts in the near future.
