Description:
This podcast covers the art of storytelling. We focus on common themes across fiction and nonfiction, and how different genres and art forms portray common storylines. For this episode, we highlight the historical fiction novel, Beneath A Scarlet Sky, and the Hollywood film, Harriet. We begin by discussing the actual historical events and figures influencing the book and film, and we asses each story’s protagonist. We compare and contrast themes and analyze how audience can affect a storyline. For the full podcast, please see the attachment below!
Reflection:
Doing a podcast with differing personalities can be hard. Every one has their own interests and perspectives on a variety of subjects. However, one of the great equalizers is story. Storytelling is inate to all humans. It is something that we all have knowledge about as we learn from the time that we are young.
We decided to hone in on that universality for our project. Looking at different stories that each of us brought to the table, we thought it would be interesting to discuss the ways in which they all connected together. For this first podcast, we discussed themes from the novel Beneath A Scarlet Sky and the movie Harriet.
Recording was an issue. We toyed with apps such as Anchor.fm. Due to differences in technology, it was hard to successfully work with such platforms. We finally decided to use the free software Cleanfeed offered as a resource to us. None of us had used it before now, so it came with its own trials and tribulations.
Another aspect that caused difficulty was editing. We all worked within Audacity since it was free and most familiar. Each of us has our own levels of experience with the software that we brought to the table.
