Description:
We created this Survival Guide with hopes of helping readers cope with the current Coronavirus pandemic. This guide is formatted as a zine (an informal magazine) and was a collective effort as we received contributions from fellow classmates and coworkers to develop this project’s content. The title is a play on Nickelodeon’s Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, a popular sitcom which followed a group of teens compiling a journal full of tips and tricks to withstand the trials of middle school. Please see the file attached below for the full document!
Reflection:
Originally, the intent was to create a satirical zine for scholars. However, those plans were disturbed by the current state of the world. As things rapidly changed and developed around us, we decided to try something new. During childhood, shows such as Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide provided both laughs and possible real advice for how to handle a variety of situations related to school. This situation is new for all of us and so it is exactly the one that we could use such a guide for.
One of the biggest issues during development was deciding which software to use. The switch to being completely online made it harder to collaborate. We toyed between InDesign and LucidPress. While LucidPress would have allowed for real time online collaboration. InDesign was ultimately more familiar. In order to share our work with each other, we would complete our individual sections and email our new versions back and forth. Screenshots and Zoom meeting were also instrumental.
