Description

A parody of TIMES magazine about how Marvel and the rest of the film industry portrays the American military in a positive light, often ignoring the harsh realities of how it affects other nations or even American soldiers.

Reflection

I have always been a fan of Marvel movies. Through all of the debates I have seen online, I feel like Civil War produces a lot of separation in the fandom to this day. The two characters at the forefront of this civil war are Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. Both of these characters have strong fan bases but have one thing in common; the U.S. military. Tony Stark made his entire fortune inventing and selling weapons for the U.S. government. Steve Rogers starts his military journey as a marketing ploy for civilians to donate funds for World War 2.

This made me pay closer attention to films and how they portrayed the U.S. military. My partner is currently in the U.S. army, about to be deployed for the second time in his career. I feel the more I talk about the military with him, I find myself noticing the gilded portrayals and romanticization of fighting for one’s country.
