Description:
My best friend has been a salon stylist for seven years and has recently started working towards a degree in political science. She ultimately hopes to become a freelance beauty specialist so she can focus more time on studying. She currently advertises her hair and makeup services by word-of-mouth and on social media, but wishes to brand her business to further expand her customer base. Looks like Yess is a play on my friends name – Yessica.
Yessica wanted her new branding to portray her identity as a beauty professional. She describes herself as approachable and confident, and she describes her services as practical and fabulous. Her only request was that the logo incorporate her favorite color – pink – and otherwise provided me free rein in the design process.
Reflection:
Yessica insisted that “I do my own thing,” which left me with little to no guidance when initially ideating this logo. I knew that she liked the branding for Benefit Cosmetics, so I used that as a starting point. Out of many sketches, Yessica indicated that she liked the look of my handwritten cursive font the best, and she liked the idea of incorporating an image like lips, scissors, or a heart. She also preferred the entire name Looks Like Yess over the abbreviation LLY.
Once I had a vision, I moved on to composing on Illustrator. I had previous experience with the application, however this was my first time creating something from scratch. It was also my first time working with a brand campaign, so it was definitely a a trial and error process, but I really enjoyed learning the ins and outs of Illustrator. Yessica was over the moon with this logo and plans to use it for her future freelance beauty services.
