Discussion:

For this portion of the project, I created a book of journal entries that I pulled from my blog, Adara Affirms. The journal entries are my rawest and most vulnerable thoughts as I navigate through my own personal healing journey. I always had the intention to eventually publish a book that would house all my journals, and I took the opportunity to design a mockup of what a possible book with my journals would look like.

Reflection:

During the process of thinking about the layout and color scheme of my book, I wanted to ensure that the colors reflected the overall logo scheme of my business within the journal. For the cover, I imagined there being an aesthetic that immediately was calming to the eyes; hence, that is why I went for a cover that had soft tones of pink, tan, and a hint of brown. I wanted my readers to feel a sense of peace as they open the journal and begin reading the entries.

Inside the journal, the pages themselves, are tan and the letters are brown. I did not want the journal to have the typical black and white page design, as I wanted the readers to have different experiences while reading the journal. For me, I am all about what is pleasing and interesting to the eye, so I wanted to provide the readers with a different aesthetic while engaging with the text. Even the font itself, is one that I found on Canva, to use. With a brown font color, I wanted the schemes of the overall journal to extend throughout the entire book, which is why I continued using brown.

Another design technique that I added to the pages were different types of plants. Each journal that I wrote has an affirmation at the end of it; so, to indicate the end of an entry, I added a plant that decorates the page that houses the affirmation text. I thought that was a unique way of showing the reader that an entry is completed, and that, they could look forward to the next piece and following decorative page. A deeper meaning of integrating plants throughout the book is that it signifies the process of growth and continual transition. Plants go through many seasons, and just as the seasons change, so do the plants. I wanted the readers to connect with not only the text, but also with the meaning behind using plants on the pages with the affirmations. I, myself, was and still am growing and continually transitioning, and I wanted to remind my readers that they are too; and that is okay.
