Description:
For the manifesto, I wanted to focus on the issue of women in gaming. Specifically, I wanted to frame the manifesto as informative and persuasive in order to showcase both the history of women in gaming and the continued harassment that they face. Going through several notable moments in recent gaming history that demonstrate the continued vitriol women gamer face, this adobe spark based manifesto ends with three goals in order to change the face of gaming. Interspliced throughout are examples from Reddit that demonstrate the comments surrounding women in gaming. Reddit was selected due to the fact that much harassment stems from the anonymous platform that still hosts a “Gamergate” subreddit.
Reflection:
Working with Adobe Spark was a new experience with me since I have only occasionally experimented with the platform in the past. I was drawn to it due to its multimodal capabilities. I especially wanted to include the reddit screenshots to supplement the text itself. Upon choosing the platform, the next step was finding research. I based my research on some of the gaming controversies I was already familiar with and my limited knowledge of women in gaming history.
As a whole, my manifesto follows the standard multimodal/spark page convention with little alteration. I am most satisfied with the topic breakdowns, Reddit image selection, and sources. I intended to include videos as part of the manifesto as a whole, but changed my mind due to the already multimodal nature of the work and not wanting to take away from the rest of the composition. However, I would add either video or audio if I remade this manifesto. Overall, the tone of Cynthia Selfe’s “To his Nibs” and the snarky, but still professional style of writing that she used. In general, the process was not too divergent from what I am already familiar with. Most of the difficulties came from the platform itself, but those concerns were resolved rather quickly.
