Description:

This project is a  parody of Seventeen magazine (www.seventeen.com). Seventeen is a bimonthly teen Magazine based in New York City. It has been around since the early 1940s. The audience is typically 13-to-19 year old females. The magazine ran in print for over 70 years, but since 2019 has moved primarily digital. “Quranteen” reflects the climate of the world and the effects of the global pandemic from its start in March 2020. The word quarantine has become synonymous with our new normal. Many news headlines, blogs, and social media trends have surfaces with millions of Americans “stuck in the house.” This magazine edition, created on Canva, takes a spin off Seventeen and highlights the quarantine lifestyle, in a fun, informative, and creative way.

Reflection:

This magazine was fun to create. The project provided me the opportunity to design something new and relevant. COVID-19 has impacted so many lives, and many of the young adults have been hit in a way, different from older generations, considering how they learn and adapt to changes. The magazine was created entirely on Canva, with the use of templates, elements, and photography and then transferred to Flipsnack. Seventeen was used as inspiration. As fun as creating this project was, it came with many drafts and difficulties. (As seen below) For one, generating the font was no walk in the park. Seventeen uses Arsis Italic and I have also seen the use of Bodoni MT italicized. I went through over 100 fonts and could not mimic the original title. Finally, I was able to remove the background from an older Seventeen issue, and find a similar font to match the letters. It is not perfect but, very close. Coming up with headlines was fairly easy and writing out the articles did not take too long. I liked the idea of going with different fonts and elements because  the audience is younger and the magazine was aimed to be fun and creative to read.
