Description
For Project 2B, we created a podcast called Nowhere Girls, and made a 20-minute episode centered on the theme of remix and the idea of “reheating nachos” as a playful rating system for remakes, covers, and remixes. Together, we discussed how different music and films either successfully transform their source material or fail to bring anything meaningful to it. Our episode combined humor, critique, and casual conversation while still engaging with larger questions about originality, adaptation, and creativity in digital culture. By comparing each of our examples, we explored how remixing can either create fresh meaning or feel unnecessary, depending on how well it reimagines the original.
Reflection
This project was genuinely so fun to make because it felt very true to us: two silly girls who are chronically online, enjoy media, and have a lot of opinions. While the episode still connected to scholarly ideas about remix, originality, and how media gets reworked over time, we wanted it to feel casual, funny, and easy to listen to instead of overly formal. We laughed so much while writing and recording, especially because the “reheating nachos” rating system gave us a ridiculous but useful way to judge whether a remake or remix actually worked. It’s also important to note that it was also our first time using the audio editing software “Audacity” to this extent – we are so proud of ourselves. We even figured out how to use the professional mic and recording booth in the digital media lab at our library. Overall, this project reminded us that criticism can still be thoughtful while being playful, unserious, and very us.
