Reflection
This magazine presented a challenge not only in the production but also the scale of the design I committed to. I wanted each spread to function independently as well as cohesively with the other side. This required a tremendous amount of planning, as I had to utilize both my knowledge of color theory and that of document layout and design. As the characters are each apart of the whole, the spreads had to be aesthetically pleasing as well as cohesive from one end to the other. I kept the cover and the article pages simple to allow the art to speak for itself as much as possible. The characters I chose are all themed around ‘rivalry’ and represent some of the more iconic pairs of the shonen genre, both new age and old. This goes hand in hand with the short write up in the center that discusses queer ships in shonen, as these characters represent not only rivals to each other but to some fans also romantic interests. This piece is not only a representation of my appreciation for manga and pop culture in the academic space, but also the acknowledgment of the queer identities and stories that exist and navigate these communities as well. Fanart is forever 🙂
