Description:
In this podcast episode we discuss food as a theme in a first-year composition course. In doing so, we review Matthew Paproth’s strategies and ideas in, “Confronting the Uncomfortable: Food and First-Year Composition.” In the second half of the episode, we interview Dr. Carrie Helms Tippen, who is an author, podcast host, and the director of First-Year Writing and an assistant professor at Chatham University. Dr. Tippen shares her experiences with composing food texts and teaching students to compose through the lens of food.
Reflection:
This project originated from one very hungry and food-passionate student, Merly, who managed to convince two of her classmates, Holland and Jieun, to talk about food in the composition classroom. This was a true collaborative effort. Despite not being able to get together in-person (due to the great COVID-19 isolation of 2020), we managed to get things done via Zoom chats, email, a shared Google doc, and Cleanfeed. Holland and Merly worked together to script parts of the podcast and come up with questions for the unscripted interview portion. And early on, Jieun expressed her desire to work behind-the-scenes, so much of the editing credit goes to her. Together, we decided where cuts should be made, how the podcast should open/end, and ultimately, what we really wanted to focus on (there were so many ideas in the beginning-everything from talking about the language of food to the role food writing could play in improving literacy). We also got to learn how to work with new (to us!) technology, including Cleanfeed and Audacity. Overall, it was a great experience!
