Description:

“How Many More Candles Must We Burn” is a manifesto that talks about the rising violence against transgender people in America and worldwide. It is an attempt to deconstruct the assertion that trans people are predators, as well as delineating how things like homelessness and inability for economic growth contribute to the violence against this community. Arguably the pioneers of the LGBT+ movement, it’s sad that this community is more marginalized and contested than their contemporaries.

Reflection:

I created this work in response to the rising anti-trans legislation levied in various states. I also wanted to unpack the violence against transgender people, particularly BIPOC ones. This work was created in the app Canva, which I’m familiar with using for creating presentations and other designs due to its relatively free cost of operation and intuitive design.

This work informed by the rage and helplessness I feel at the transphobia and violence that plagues society. I’m tired of conservative lawmakers positioning trans people as predators and using trans identities as political weapons in our culture war.
